Active Shooter and Safety Plan Resource PageThe purpose of this information is to provide LUGPA practices with resources about how to effectively manage an active shooter incident and create a safety plan for their practice. Recent mass shootings in Highland Park, Ill., Buffalo, N.Y. and Uvalde, Tx. are only the latest in a long list of active shooter incidents that are becoming more frequent in the United States. Urology groups are not immune to this problem, with a staff member being killed in a LUGPA group in 2020, as well as at least 5 other shootings in urology offices in recent years. Data analysis by The Marshall Project indicate there were more mass shootings in the past five years than in any other half-decade going back to 1966. In light of the increase in mass shootings, particularly the incident in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where a gunman reportedly stormed a doctor’s office at a hospital complex, LUGPA would like to provide its practices with resources on how to effectively manage an active shooter incident and create a safety plan for their practice. Educating your clinical and non-clinical staff is a way to be prepared for disasters, reduce anxiety, and save lives. LUGPA's new Active Shooter and Safety Plan Resource Page contains information on preparedness for an active shooter situation in a medical office, evacuation plans, de-escalation techniques, bleeding control, and being vigilant. Download the Active Shooter and Safety Plan PDF here. LUGPA's 2022 Annual Meeting will also feature a breakout session on this important topic.
